Jaxie's Journey
DONATIONS desperately needed to help Jaxie. Please donate today.
In July of 2009, A Caring Place Humane Society rescued Jaxie, a fawn colored, 4 year old Great Dane who was on the euthanasia list at a shelter in Mississippi. He clearly had some health issues which we initially thought was a severe case of hip dysplasia, but unfortunately he has a more serious and difficult condition.
Jaxie went to our veterinarian and was diagnosed with severe arthritis in his knees which has caused his bones to fuse. In addition, he had suffered from a broken pelvis at some point in his life, and it was never corrected. On top of all of this, Jaxie tested positive for Heartworm Disease. We had to establish a course of action for addressing Jaxie's most critical needs.
Our first priority has been to address the pain that Jaxie is in. He has been placed on three different medications and we are going to see if he gets any relief and then make adjustments. Our second priority was to make sure Jaxie was healthy enough to go through the very difficult heartworm treatment.
Thankfully, Jaxie was able to start his heartworm treatment the last week of July; he now has four weeks of absolute confinement and rest so that his body can absorb the dead worms safely. After those four weeks, Jaxie will go back to the vet and receive another treatment injection and have another three weeks or so of confinement. When he completes these treatments, he will need to have another bloodtest to see if the treatment worked, and killed all of the heartworms and their microfilaria.
After the heartworm treatment our vets will evaluate the next course of action for Jaxie's knees. The veterinary care costs for Jaxie will be quite high and we are desperate for donations to help with the bills. Please consider donating toward Jaxie's bills. We would greatly appreciate it.
