Where Do All the Animals Come From?
A Caring Place takes in animals from different sources including those relinquished by owners/guardians and good samaritans. However, our primary source for animals are those at risk of euthanasia [being killed/put to sleep] in animal control agencies, shelters both local and from other states, and veterinary offices.
A Caring Place focusses most of their rescue efforts on mixed breed dogs and cats since there are now many breed specific rescues in the Chicagoland and Great Lakes area. The Directors and Leaders feel strongly that A Caring Place is a safe-haven for the mixed breed.
The sad reality is that there are some 5+ million dogs and cats killed each and every year in the United States because not enough people adopt from shelters, and because too many puppies and kittens are being born with no home/family for them to go to. The great news is the 5+ million number is down substantially from twenty years ago when the number was closer to 27 million each year killed; this significant decrease occurred in the kill rate because of diligent spay/neuter campaigns across the U.S. That has helped tremendously. The problem now is that only 20% of all pet owners actually get/adopt their companion dog or cat from a humane society, shelter, animal control agencies or similar but many many more people relinquish their pets to the agencies when they no longer can keep them.
So, THANK YOU for looking into what A Caring Place Humane Society is all about. We sincerely hope we can help you find your next forever companion dog or cat or help you keep your current animal.
Please know that A Caring Place does not set time limits on our animals to make room for another; we do not euthanize due to old age or costly health care needs. While in our care, animals receive all medical care and treatment necessary including inoculations, sterilization, testing and prevention for disease, surgeries, and medicines.
